120 mm Gun Barrel Inspection Data

QUEST has provided several laser-based inspection systems specifically for 3-D mapping of gun tubes. These include systems for 25 mm rifled barrels, 120 mm smooth bore gun tubes and rifled 155 mm gun tubes.

The 120 mm system is designed to automatically map, analyze and report chrome loss and compare to preset thresholds. In addition, the 120 mm system gauges the barrel diameter continuously along the length of the barrel to an accuracy of +/-0.0004 inches. The attached picture shows the end of the barrel, the measurement probe and screen shot of the output data. The screen shows significant chrome loss due to chipping on the surface.

The 155 mm system is primarily used for surface wear analysis. The 3-D data from the measurement system is exported for further analysis under matlab. The customer has also used our LOTIS® 3-D profile data to create a physical model of the 155 gun tube with all of the wear marks faithfully reproduced on the inside surface.
