Problem:

 

When the Recoverable Solid Rocket Motors (RSRM) used by the Space Shuttle are recovered, the o-ring seal surfaces must be refurbished to meet specific surface contour specifications to assure proper seal on the next flight.  ATK/Thiokol had been using a very slow and difficult to maintain scanning system that took up to 17 hours to scan the seal surfaces.

 

Solution:

 

The laser scanner system that QUEST developed provides a high resolution map of the o-ring surfaces and automatically determines the depth and location of all surface features that do not meet the surface contour specifications.  The system combines miniature laser probes with state-of-the-art user control and user interface displays that reduces the inspection time by a factor of 5 to 10 times.
